Deity of the day : Idunn or Iðunn
Share
Today I’m sharing a short article about Idunn, a figure from Norse mythology.
She is the Asyne goddess of youth, guardian of the gods’ apples.
These apples are a major asset for the other gods of Asgard, as once eaten, they grant eternal youth and strength to whoever consumes them.
She is also the wife of Bragi, another god who represents poetry.
In the illustration above, I depicted Idunn being abducted by Thjazi, a giant from Thrymheim.
After yet another one of his tricks, Loki proposes the planned kidnapping of Idunn to the giant in exchange for his own freedom. Thjazi agrees, and Loki goes to speak with Idunn, convincing her to leave Asgard and go into a forest that Thjazi can access.
Thjazi then transforms into a giant eagle and manages to abduct Idunn along with her apples. The abduction causes an uproar among the other Asgardian gods, as their apples, which ensure their youth until Ragnarök, are no longer available.
Loki is ordered to go to Jötunheim to retrieve Idunn and take her back directly from Thrymheim.
The cunning god transforms Idunn into a nut to make it easier to bring her back to Asgard. Using Freyja’s feather cloak, Loki flies in bird form and escapes Thjazi during the chase.
The furious giant doesn't realize he has crossed the borders of Asgard… and is struck down by the gods as soon as he’s off his own territory.
This is just a personal little write-up, I invite you to do your own research too, using books and sources written by experts for more accuracy! :)
